COVID-19 Risk Communication & Community Engagement Stories from the Field – Sudan
Description
Sudan has been impacted by government instability and civil war for over 30 years. As a result of this and continuous political instability and civil war, the health system has been severely weakened. COVID-19 is spreading rapidly across Sudan, but more cases are occurring in Khartoum and spread outside the region. Khartoum is an urban area that is one of the largest states in the country that experienced the revolution last year and is now witnessing the spread of COVID-19. The first case was detected on 12 March 2020 and, two days later, the Government of Sudan introduced measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Preventive measures included the closure of schools, workplaces and the ban on large public gatherings. There are 1,164 confirmed cases as of 10 May, 119 recovered and 70 fatalities. At the same time, Sudan has experienced irregular outbreaks such as cholera, chikungunya and dengue fever and, as a result of this, a National Plan was established in partnership with the Government of Sudan and other partners to focus on susceptible cases. Sudan’s National Plan is led by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and includes three phases: Response and
Mobilisation, Control and Monitoring, and Recovery and Resilience.
